Pdf Summary
This document is a summary of a session titled "Patient Advocacy" at the WCLC 2023 conference. The session presented a systematic review on stigma-reducing interventions for lung cancer and other smoking-related respiratory diseases. The study aimed to identify existing interventions and assess their efficacy in reducing stigma associated with these conditions.

The review found 10 studies describing nine distinct interventions that addressed lung cancer stigma specifically. The interventions focused on behavior change, psychotherapeutic intervention, and providing information or reference material to individuals. Most interventions were designed for symptomatic individuals or higher-risk groups in high-income countries. Some interventions targeted oncology care providers and family members/supporters in addition to individuals with higher risk.

The majority of the interventions showed a statistically significant reduction in at least one measure of stigma, or a decrease in stigma reported through qualitative methods. The interventions were delivered in pilot or feasibility studies with small sample sizes or short follow-up durations, indicating a need for further evaluation. There was a lack of community- or policy-level interventions identified in the review.

The findings also suggested that remote and digital intervention delivery showed promise in increasing accessibility for individuals with comorbidities or functional loss related to respiratory disease. However, more stigma-reducing interventions need to be developed and evaluated with larger samples and in various socio-cultural contexts. The review emphasized the inclusion of validated stigma assessments in future interventional studies to identify more effective techniques for targeted stigma reduction.

In conclusion, the systematic review provides evidence for the efficacy of stigma-reducing interventions for lung cancer and smoking-related respiratory diseases. The findings highlight the need for further research and development of interventions to address the psychosocial impact of stigma in these conditions.
