Pdf Summary
This document is a summary of a session titled "Patient Advocacy" at the World Conference on Lung Cancer in 2023. The session focused on stigma-reducing interventions for lung cancer and other smoking-related respiratory diseases. The presentation outlined the negative impact of stigma on individuals affected by these conditions, including distress, isolation, and delayed help-seeking. The need for stigma-reducing interventions was identified as a priority, and the session presented a systematic review of existing interventions in this area. The review included ten studies and identified nine distinct interventions. These interventions aimed to reduce externalized or internalized stigma and included behavior change programs, psychotherapeutic interventions, and providing information or reference materials. Most interventions showed promising results in reducing stigma, either through quantitative measures or qualitative methods. The interventions were mainly delivered in pilot or feasibility studies with small sample sizes, indicating the need for further evaluation. The review also highlighted the potential of remote and digital intervention delivery in increasing accessibility for individuals with respiratory diseases. However, the review identified a lack of community- or policy-level interventions and emphasized the need for larger sample sizes and a variety of socio-cultural contexts in future studies. Validated stigma assessments should also be included in a wider range of intervention studies to identify effective techniques for targeted stigma reduction.
