Pdf Summary
This document presents the findings of a study on lung cancer mortality in Brazil, focusing on temporal trends, regional disparities, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study used secondary data from Brazil's public health system from 2000 to 2020 and calculated age-adjusted lung cancer mortality rates and hospital admission rates per 100,000 inhabitants, stratified by sex. Linear regression and Spearman correlation were used for data analysis.

The results showed a reduction in age-adjusted lung cancer mortality among males over the study period, but an increase among females. There was a positive association between mortality and smoking rates among men, but an inverse relationship for women. Furthermore, mortality decreased in more developed regions of Brazil (Southeast and South) and increased in less developed regions (North and Northeast). Hospitalizations for lung cancer showed a progressive increase over the years, but a decrease between 2020 and 2021, possibly due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study also found a decrease in the proportion of patients with early diagnosis among those with private health insurance and women during the pandemic, which may potentially increase the cost of care in the private health sector. A micro-costing analysis estimated a potential increase of approximately 4% in the cost of care in the private health sector and 0.5% in the public health setting.

In conclusion, the study highlights the decreasing trend in lung cancer mortality in more developed regions and among men in Brazil, but emphasizes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on both epidemiological curves and healthcare expenditure. This research provides insights into the disparities in lung cancer mortality and the effects of the pandemic on the Brazilian healthcare system.
