Pdf Summary
This study aimed to assess the trends in lung cancer mortality in Brazil, regional disparities in mortality rates, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on lung cancer diagnosis and treatment. The researchers conducted an ecological study using secondary data from Brazil's public health system from 2000-2020.

The results showed a reduction in age-adjusted lung cancer mortality among men but an increase among women during the study period. There was a positive association between mortality and smoking among men but an inverse relationship among women. Mortality was found to decrease in more developed regions of Brazil (Southeast and South) and increase in less developed regions (North and Northeast).

Hospitalizations for lung cancer showed a progressive increase over the years, but there was a downward trend between 2020-2021, possibly due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic also affected the epidemiological curves and budgetary expenditure of lung cancer care.

The study also found that there was no significant delay in starting treatment during the pandemic. However, the proportion of patients with early diagnosis decreased among those with private health insurance and women. This change in diagnosis staging has the potential to increase the cost of care in both private and public health settings.

Overall, the study highlights the disparities in lung cancer mortality rates in Brazil and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on lung cancer care. The findings suggest the need for targeted interventions to reduce lung cancer mortality, especially among women and in less developed regions of the country.
