Pdf Summary
This study aimed to characterize survival disparities among Asian Pacific Islander (API) subgroups in Stage IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) in California. The researchers analyzed data on Stage IV NSCLC cases diagnosed in California from 1988 to 2020, focusing on various factors including frequency differences, tumor characteristics, and overall survival (OS). The study included Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Korean, Vietnamese, South Asian (SA), Pacific Islander (PI), and Other Southeast Asians (OSA) subgroups.

The results showed that Japanese had the highest percentage of patients diagnosed at 75 years or older, while OSA and PI had the lowest. South Asians had the highest percentage of highest socioeconomic status (SES), while OSA had the lowest. Chinese had the highest percentage of never smokers, while Japanese had the lowest. Chinese also had the highest percentage of adenocarcinoma, while Japanese had the lowest.

In terms of overall survival, South Asians had the greatest 12-month OS, while Japanese, PI, and OSA had the lowest. Multivariate analysis revealed that compared to Chinese, Japanese, PI, and OSA had significantly higher mortality risk. Further analysis showed that the increased mortality risk in Japanese was primarily tied to tumor characteristics, older age at diagnosis, and smoking. In contrast, SES, younger age at diagnosis, and insurance played a role in the increased mortality risk in OSA and PI.

In conclusion, Japanese, PI, and OSA subgroups exhibited significantly higher mortality risk in Stage IV NSCLC. The study highlights the importance of evaluating each API subgroup separately when assessing mortality risk in Stage IV NSCLC.
