Pdf Summary
This study conducted in Victoria, Australia aimed to assess the impact of stage-specific guideline concordant treatment (GCT) on small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients and their survival. The researchers analyzed data from the Victorian Lung Cancer Registry between January 2012 and November 2021.

The study found that in patients with limited-stage (LS) SCLC, a higher proportion received non-GCT compared to GCT. In contrast, a higher proportion of patients with extensive-stage (ES) SCLC received GCT compared to non-GCT. Patients who were 70 years or older and those with ES-SCLC had reduced odds of receiving GCT.

The researchers also compared survival outcomes between patients who received GCT and those who did not. Patients with LS-SCLC who were treated with GCT had a 35% increase in one-year survival and a 21% increase in two-year survival compared to non-GCT treated patients. Patients with ES-SCLC treated with GCT had a 14% increase in one-year survival and a 4% increase in two-year survival compared to non-GCT patients.

Furthermore, patients with neoplastic comorbidity, an ECOG score of 2, or ES-SCLC had an increased risk of mortality. However, patients who received GCT had a significantly reduced risk of mortality compared to those who received non-GCT.

The study highlights significant variation in the treatment of SCLC based on stage in Victoria. Adherence to stage-specific GCT practices can reduce unwarranted variation in treatment and significantly improve survival for patients with SCLC.
