Pdf Summary
The 2024 Asia Conference on Lung Cancer (ACLC 2024) features significant research on non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which constitutes the majority of lung cancer cases and is often diagnosed at advanced metastatic stages. The study, led by researchers from the Department of Immunology at Air Force Medical University in China, focuses on the protein BCAP31 as a potential prognostic factor for NSCLC metastasis.

The researchers analyzed the expression of BCAP31, calreticulin, glucose-regulated protein 78, and glucose-regulated protein 94 in 360 NSCLC patients using immunohistochemical techniques. They discovered that high expression levels of these proteins, particularly BCAP31, correlated with poorer overall survival rates. BCAP31 was also associated with the histological grade and p53 status of NSCLC, findings that were corroborated by data from seven NSCLC transcript microarray datasets.

Further experiments involved manipulating BCAP31 levels in three NSCLC cell lines to observe its influence on cell behavior. Changes in BCAP31 expression significantly impacted the migration and invasion capacities of the cancer cells. The team conducted a Gene Set Enrichment Analysis, which indicated that BCAP31 affected cellular behavior via the Akt/m-TOR/p70S6K pathway, a finding supported by immunofluorescence, kinase phosphorylation, and cellular behavior assays.

Label-free mass spectroscopy data suggested BCAP31's involvement in fundamental biological processes, highlighting its potential role as a novel prognostic marker for NSCLC metastasis. This study not only identifies BCAP31 as a significant factor in NSCLC progression but also proposes it as a target for new therapeutic strategies. The research was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Shanxi Province Natural Science Basic Research Program.
