PP01.10: Effects of Respiratory Physiotherapy in Hospitalized Oncological Patients with Pleural Effusion

The study explores the impact of a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program (PRP) on hospitalized oncological patients suffering from malignant pleural effusion (MPE), with goals to enhance respiratory function, reduce the duration of hospital stays, and decrease the necessity for supplemental oxygen. Conducted between December 2023 and June 2024, this retrospective analysis observed 60 patients, with a median age of 49.5 years. The patients presented various oncological diagnoses and pleural effusion causes, predominantly malignant in nature (80%).<br /><br />Results indicated that the PRP had positive effects but not statistically significant in resolving pleural effusion, reducing supplemental oxygen usage, and shortening hospital stays. Patients who underwent PRP showed a reduction in supplementary oxygen usage from an initial 19 patients to 8 following the intervention. Their median hospital stay was noted to be 8 days, while the median duration of PRP intervention itself was 4 days.<br /><br />Despite these findings, the statistical comparisons for oxygen usage reduction and hospital stay length did not achieve significance, with respective p-values of 0.255 and 0.292. This suggests that while improvements were observed, more extensive PRP interventions could potentially elicit more pronounced benefits.<br /><br />The study underlines the PRP's potential utility for patients with MPE, encouraging further exploration and longer-term implementations to fully grasp its effectiveness.
