Pdf Summary
The study detailed in the article aims to bridge a knowledge gap in thoracic surgical oncology within Latin America, focusing specifically on outcomes from lung cancer resections in patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). Conducted using data from the thoracic surgery service at a hospital in Cali, Colombia, the study provides insights covering the period from 2009 to 2023. A total of 185 lung resections were analyzed to assess operative mortality, defined as death during the hospital stay or within 30 days post-surgery, and major morbidity featuring complications like tracheostomy, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and myocardial infarction.

The patient demographic primarily consisted of individuals with a median age of 67, slightly more females (56.2%) than males, with significant fractions having a history of smoking (52.4%) and hypertension (42.1%). The majority of procedures (86.5%) were performed using video-assisted thoracoscopy.

The study found that adenocarcinoma was the most prevalent form of NSCLC, with most cases being early-stage (69.2%). The median hospital stay post-surgery was 6 days, with total morbidity and mortality rates reported at 11.4% and 4.9%, respectively. Major morbidity was noted in 8.6% of the cases.

Outcomes varied by surgical procedure, with wedge resections showing higher rates (mortality 5.9%, major morbidity 7.1%) compared to lobectomies (mortality 3.3%, major morbidity 10.9%). Neumonectomy, while rare, had a significantly higher procedure mortality at 20%.

The collected data enhances understanding of lung cancer surgery outcomes in the region and aids in improving surgical protocols and identifying key risk factors associated with these outcomes.
