Pdf Summary
A study conducted at the National Cancer Institute of Colombia by Daniel Felipe Mendivelso-González, Carlos Andrés Carvajal-Fierro, and Rafael Parra-Medina analyzed the epidemiology of lung and pleural neoplasms from 2020 to 2024. Lung cancer ranks as the sixth most prevalent cancer in Colombia, contributing significantly to mortality rates, which underscores the importance of understanding its patterns for better clinical management and prevention strategies.

The objective was to distinguish between primary tumors originating within the lungs or pleura and those metastasized from other organs. The study reviewed 583 neoplasm cases, categorizing them into primary and metastatic categories. Among 184 primary lung tumors, adenocarcinoma was the most prevalent type, with 111 cases reported, followed by neuroendocrine tumors and squamous cell carcinoma. Other primary tumor types included large cell carcinomas and non-small cell carcinoma NOS.

A significant number of metastatic tumors to the lungs originated from sarcomas, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and renal tumors. In the pleura, 33 cases of mesothelioma and 4 solitary fibrous tumors were reported as primary tumors. Metastatic involvement of the pleura featured prominently in 103 cases, with breast and colorectal cancers being the common sources, alongside gastrointestinal tumors and others.

This study underscores the substantial impact of lung and pleural neoplasms in Colombia, with lung adenocarcinoma being the most common primary lung cancer. The prevalence of metastatic tumors, notably from breast and colorectal cancers, necessitates robust strategies to improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment outcomes. These findings offer critical insights into the epidemiological trends of lung and pleural cancers, aiming at enhancing public health policies in Colombia.
