Pdf Summary
The document presents a qualitative study exploring the experiences of informal caregivers of adult lung cancer patients in Chile. Lung cancer ranks as the leading cause of death in Chile, and since its inclusion in the Explicit Health Guarantee Plan in 2019, a framework for diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up has been established. Other public policies include the National Cancer Plan, the Cancer Law, the Financial Protection Law, and the High-Cost Drug Program. Despite these measures, caregivers and families still encounter significant challenges.

Secondary caregivers are highlighted as informal extensions of the health system, yet they lack formal support or recognition, leading to an increased caregiving burden. The study uses online semi-structured interviews with 10 secondary caregivers to probe their experiences and interactions with the health system. Analysis follows the Tanahashi model, which considers dimensions such as availability, accessibility, acceptability, and contact.

Caregivers noted positive aspects such as the quality of equipment and human resources but pointed out critical issues primarily in public institutions. These include technical and administrative barriers, fragmented health systems, limited oncological emergency services, and delays in supplying essential items like oxygen. Additionally, caregivers face significant economic and logistical hurdles, coupled with long wait times for medication.

There is a reported need for more empathy and understanding from healthcare professionals, with instances of discrimination and insufficient interaction being common. A crucial portion of clinical responsibilities is also frequently delegated to untrained caregivers, further straining their capacities.

The study concludes by stressing the need to formally recognize and support informal caregivers within the Chilean health framework. Future policies must integrate caregivers as active care partners, providing necessary training and resources to alleviate their burdens and enhance equity in cancer care.
