Pdf Summary
This study explored the effectiveness of a Health Belief Model-based health education program aimed at reducing the intention to use tobacco among adolescents in Ibadan, Nigeria. The randomized controlled trial involved 720 school-going adolescents, evenly split between an intervention group (IG) and a control group (CG), across eight high schools. The participants' average age was 14.7 years, with an equal gender distribution.

The primary outcome measured was the intention to use tobacco within the next 12 months. Initially, 13.6% of participants in both groups had plans to use tobacco. Post-intervention results showed a notable reduction in tobacco use intentions in the IG (from 13.6% to 8.9%), while intentions slightly increased in the CG (from 13.6% to 14.4%). The odds of improvement, defined as no intention to use tobacco at the endpoint, were 1.7 times higher in the IG compared to the CG (adjusted odds ratio of 1.71 with a 95% confidence interval of 1.07-2.74).

The intervention consisted of two expert-led educational sessions focused on tobacco, along with distributing posters and notebooks to reinforce the message. In contrast, the CG received lectures on oral hygiene, unrelated to tobacco use.

The study highlights the significance of targeted educational interventions in reducing tobacco use intentions among adolescents. This approach can be crucial for public health initiatives aimed at lowering tobacco prevalence in Nigeria. The successful application of a Health Belief Model in this context underscores its potential as a framework for health education programs targeting behavioral intentions linked to health risks.
