Pdf Summary
This study investigates the potential impact of tobacco control policies on preventing lung cancer in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) from 2025 to 2050. The study evaluates four main strategies: full implementation of WHO's MPOWER measures, maximizing health literacy, increasing the tobacco affordability index by 10%, and a comprehensive approach combining all these measures.

According to projections, over 2.16 million new lung cancer cases are expected in the EMR during this period. The comprehensive approach could prevent approximately 126,000 new cases, equating to a 5.8% reduction. Among the individual strategies, increasing health literacy is identified as the most effective, potentially preventing up to 82,560 cases, a 3.8% reduction. Highest MPOWER measures and a 10% increase in the tobacco affordability index could prevent approximately 48,251 and 34,690 cases, respectively, indicating lesser impacts compared to health literacy enhancement.

The study emphasizes the significant role of New comprehensive anti-tobacco policies in mitigating future lung cancer incidences in the EMR. Furthermore, the authors stress the necessity for future research to evaluate the impact of tobacco control policies on all tobacco-related cancers and to conduct cost-effectiveness analyses for these interventions.

The study is conducted by researchers from the Genomic Epidemiology Branch of the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, and the Cancer Institute of Iran in Tehran, Iran. It acknowledges contributions from various experts and employs linear regression models to analyze associations between tobacco prevalence and policy implementation. The publication calls for collaborative efforts among EMR countries to adopt these comprehensive policies to significantly impact lung cancer prevention.
