Back to course
Pdf Summary
The ZORALCS-study aims to improve participation in lung cancer screening (LCS) among hard-to-reach populations in the South-East Region of Antwerp, Belgium. Lung cancer is a prevalent and deadly disease, and early detection through screening, particularly using Low-Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT), can significantly reduce mortality rates. However, engaging high-risk individuals, especially those who are difficult to reach, poses significant challenges.

This four-year feasibility study targets adults aged 55-74 who are current or former smokers. It combines LDCT screening with a smoking cessation intervention. The study plans to use risk prediction models, HUNT and PLCOm2012, to determine the likelihood of participants developing lung cancer within six years, focusing on individuals within the ZORA primary care zone.

Key strategies involve educating both healthcare providers and participants about lung cancer screenings' benefits and challenges, including addressing stigma and incidental findings. These education efforts use various media, such as leaflets, radio, TV, and posters.

The study also emphasizes assessing and developing effective invitation and recruitment strategies tailored to the Flemish population. Methods include evaluating different invitation styles and leveraging insights from community outreach and digital platforms to enhance screening accessibility for hard-to-reach groups. An external citizens' committee helps assess and score different invitation methods to determine the most effective approach.

Collaborative efforts involve various healthcare providers and social services, ensuring comprehensive support and education. The primary objectives are to determine participation rates and enhance recruitment through effective education and tailored strategies. The study aims to overcome socio-economic barriers, stigma, digital literacy challenges, and health literacy issues to ensure equitable access to lung cancer screening.
