P2.04B.01 Argentine Lung Cancer Screening Programes Collaborative Registry: The LuCaS.Ar Project
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The Lu.Ca.S.Ar Project marks the initiation of Argentina's first collaborative lung cancer screening (LCS) registry, focusing on institutions primarily located in large urban areas with private funding. The project's central challenge is aligning the program features with national LCS consensus recommendations, expanding institution participation, and enhancing patient accessibility to screening nationwide.

The registry operates as an analytical, observational, ambispective, follow-up study targeting high-risk individuals with a history of heavy smoking (30 pack-years), aged 55-74. Participating institutions record data in a unified web-based system, facilitating a coherent collection of variables. This registry seeks to better understand adherence levels to LCS national guidelines and improve early lung cancer detection rates, showcasing promising pilot results from Latin America in early detection and diagnostic accuracy.

Despite strong evidence supporting LCS's role in reducing lung cancer mortality with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT), adherence remains low, exacerbated by barriers at both healthcare provider and population levels. This is particularly challenging in low-income countries, underscoring the need for consistent and widespread implementation of LCS practices.

The study has evidenced that a majority of screening programs are privately funded (67%), posing additional challenges for equitable public access. Future efforts will likely focus on overcoming these economic and logistical barriers to foster a more inclusive national LCS initiative. This project is a crucial step towards uniform screening practices in Argentina, aiming to reduce lung cancer mortality through early detection and adherence to established screening standards.
