Pdf Summary
The study investigated the effectiveness of the 4R Oncology intervention in enhancing patient awareness of biomarker test timing and purpose in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The 4R model—Right Info/Care/Patient/Time— is designed to improve patient self-management and timely care through a personalized Care Sequence. This approach was implemented at eight centers in 2022-2023, surveyed both 4R and historical control cohorts.

The study sought to address the challenge of ensuring patients are well-informed about biomarker testing—a crucial step for patient engagement in their own care. The intervention involved refining Care Sequences to emphasize the timing of biomarker testing in relation to treatment decisions and suggesting actions for patients while waiting for results, such as pursuing supportive care.

Results indicated significant improvement across all evaluated metrics for the 4R cohort compared to controls. These metrics included patients' awareness of the need for waiting for test results before starting therapy, their understanding of potential actions while waiting, and the clarity of how biomarkers influence treatment decisions. Response rates were similar between the 4R group (67%) and the control group (66%).

Key improvements noted in the 4R cohort were higher rates of patient willingness to wait for biomarker results before therapy (95% vs. 77% in controls) and better understanding of test timing (93% vs. 53% in controls). The study concludes that implementing the 4R model significantly boosts patient understanding and engagement. As a result, a national rollout of 4R Care Sequences is in progress, aiming to make these care plans widely available at no cost to cancer programs and patients.

The study acknowledges the input of patients, clinicians, and supporting organizations, underlining the collaborative effort in advancing patient-centered oncology care.
