Pdf Summary
The document summarizes a study led by Andrew Ciupek, PhD, evaluating barriers and facilitators to cancer clinical trial participation among Black people with lung cancer in the Southeastern United States. Participation rates in these trials are low (6-8% of all cancer patients), with Black patients being further underrepresented (6% of trial participants). This lack of representation affects data applicability and may elevate medical mistrust in these communities.

The study, part of the STRIDES (Studying Trial Determinants of Success) project, aimed to understand these barriers through surveys assessing experiences of stigma, cancer fatalism, and trial discussions. Participants were selected based on criteria including diagnosis of lung cancer within five years and identifying as Black, African American, or African. Survey administration methods were tailored to each study site, including the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and INOVA Schar Cancer Institute.

Results indicated that over half of participants had no conversations about clinical trials after diagnosis. Those who did discuss trials identified their oncologists as preferred information sources. Many indicated varied preferences for how trial information should be delivered. The survey also noted low rates of lung cancer stigma and fatalism among the insured participants.

The conclusion suggests increasing trial dialogue frequency and modality to boost enrollment, particularly given that previous research indicates a willingness among marginalized populations to join trials if informed appropriately. Nevertheless, the study highlights the need for further research to assess these findings' applicability across other Black sub-populations with lung cancer, who may not fit the same demographic or social profiles as the current participants.
