Pdf Summary
This study investigates the effect of preoperative anxiety on postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing minimally invasive thoracoscopic surgery. Conducted as a prospective cohort study, it involved 540 patients, distinguishing them into anxiety and non-anxiety groups based on the Hospitalization Anxiety Scale. Approximately 22% of patients exhibited preoperative anxiety.

Key findings include:

1. **Length of Hospitalization**: The mean hospitalization time was longer for those with preoperative anxiety (4.33 days) compared to those without (3.85 days).

2. **Postoperative Complications**: Rates of postoperative complications were similar in both groups, indicating that preoperative anxiety does not increase postoperative complications.

3. **Sleep Quality and Pain**: The Athens Insomnia Scale revealed worsened sleep disturbances in the anxiety group post-surgery. Regarding pain, severe pain instances were notably higher on the second postoperative day in the anxiety group. Overall sleep and pain disruptions were more prevalent in the anxiety group.

4. **Nausea and Vomiting**: Patients with preoperative anxiety experienced higher incidents of postoperative nausea and vomiting on the first postoperative day.

The study concludes that while preoperative anxiety may not directly increase postoperative complications, it significantly associates with non-complicated adverse events such as sleep disturbances, increased pain, and nausea, contributing to prolonged hospitalization. Therefore, monitoring and managing preoperative anxiety can potentially improve these postoperative outcomes, highlighting anxiety's modifiable nature.
