Pdf Summary
This study analyzes the prevalence of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) among lung cancer patients using data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database between 2016 and 2020. MACCE was defined to include all-cause in-hospital mortality (ACIHM), acute myocardial infarction (AMI), atrial fibrillation (AF), cerebrovascular accident (CVA), and sudden cardiac death (SCD).

Out of 1,961,429 lung cancer hospitalizations, 32.8% experienced MACCE. The study highlights racial disparities, reporting that 77.39% of the cohort were White, 12.6% African American, 4.6% Hispanic, 2.88% Asian/Pacific Islanders, 0.38% Native Americans, and 2.12% other races.

Key findings indicate that dyslipidemia was prevalent in Whites, whereas hypertension, renal failure, and congestive heart failure were more common in African Americans. Hispanics had a higher incidence of diabetes, and obesity was most frequent among Native Americans.

In terms of MACCE occurrence, 80% were reported among Whites, 11% in African Americans, 4% in Hispanics, 3% in Asians/Pacific Islanders, 0.4% in Native Americans, and 2% in other races. ACIHM was notably higher in Asian/Pacific Islanders compared to Whites, while cerebral events and SCD were more frequent in African Americans as opposed to Whites.

Despite improvements in lung cancer therapies and increased five-year survival rates, the study emphasizes the need for careful monitoring of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risks during treatment. The results underscore significant racial and ethnic disparities, suggesting an urgent need for equitable healthcare access and the integration of cardio-oncology approaches to potentially improve patient outcomes.
