Pdf Summary
The Lung Cancer Stigma Communications Assessment Tool (LCS-CAT) seeks to enhance engagement within the lung cancer community by identifying and replacing stigmatizing language, imagery, and contexts in communications materials. Building upon the IASLC Language Guide 1.0, the tool addresses the challenges of disseminating lung cancer-related information by providing methods to avoid stigma. The LCS-CAT encompasses six key components, including a comprehensive audit process and alternatives guide across three main domains: language, imagery, and context.

For language, the tool assesses elements that could contribute to stigma, such as labeling, blaming, and oversimplifications, and offers alternatives to these potentially harmful terms. Imagery is also scrutinized for elements such as color schemes, settings, social interactions, and expressions that might alienate or stigmatize individuals affected by lung cancer. Contextual factors, like the themes and intended audience of messages, are evaluated to prevent undesired stigma-related outcomes.

The LCS-CAT was developed with funding from the American Cancer Society (ACS) National Lung Cancer Roundtable's Stigma and Nihilism Task Group, leveraging resources from other stigmatized conditions like mental health and HIV/AIDS to create a robust framework for lung cancer communications.

Future versions of the tool, including Version 2.0, will incorporate annotated implementation examples and be available online. This approach aims not only to replace stigmatizing elements but also to advocate for empathetic and supportive engagement with the lung cancer community, facilitating reframing, re-education, and building self-esteem through person-centered communication strategies. The tool is intended to support progress in lung cancer prevention and control by mitigating the effects of stigma associated with smoking and lung cancer diagnosis.
