Pdf Summary
This study focuses on lung cancer incidence among women of reproductive age, with a particular interest in cases where pregnancy is involved. Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with significant gender-based differences in incidence trends; men show a more significant decline compared to women. This discrepancy is notable in younger women, especially among white non-Hispanic and Hispanic demographics, where lung cancer incidence exceeds that of young men.

The study aims to assess the impact of lung cancer on pregnant versus non-pregnant women, including the clinical characteristics, hospital complications, outcomes, and mortality rates. Using a retrospective cohort study design over five years (2016-2020) and analyzing data from the national inpatient database, the study comprises 32,405 female patients of reproductive age diagnosed with lung cancer, of whom 80 were pregnant.

Key findings indicate pregnant patients experienced a higher impact, with longer hospital stays, increased hospitalization costs, and higher mortality rates (12.5% compared to 7.55% for non-pregnant patients). Complications such as mechanical ventilation were notably higher in pregnant women, pointing to significant care challenges for this group. Demographically, the distribution of cases by race shows a majority of white patients for both groups, though mortality rates did not significantly differ by race.

The study underscores the need for specialized management strategies for pregnant women with lung cancer, given their unique vulnerabilities and care demands. It calls for further research to optimize treatment and outcomes, emphasizing the importance of addressing this dual health challenge for both mother and fetus. The findings advocate for heightened clinical vigilance and tailored patient care approaches.
