Pdf Summary
The study "Lung Cancer Screening Outcomes in Aotearoa New Zealand" highlights the disparity in lung cancer mortality rates between Indigenous Māori and NZ European/Other populations. It evaluates the effectiveness of lung cancer screening (LCS) using low-dose CT in reducing mortality and focuses on improving participation among Māori through a randomized controlled trial of two invitation methods – one led by primary care and another by a central hub with established expertise in screening.

Conducted in Auckland's Te Toka Tumai and Waitematā districts, the study included Māori aged 55-74 with a history of smoking. Invitations to participate in the screening were sent to 2,090 individuals, with phone follow-ups for risk assessment, which utilized the PLCOm2012 model. Whānau (family) support was encouraged throughout the process.

Out of 1,010 eligible participants for risk assessment, 54% were at a 6-year lung cancer risk of 2% or more, leading them to participate in shared decision-making and potentially proceed with a CT scan. Ultimately, 504 participants agreed to the CT scan, yielding a lung cancer detection rate of 2.5%.

The study found that the central hub-based invitation method led to significantly higher participation rates than the primary care-led approach. While primary care plays an essential role in LCS, a centralized approach was more effective in this context. The findings provide critical insights into early detection strategies for lung cancer among Māori and will influence future implementations of equitable, effective screening programs in Aotearoa New Zealand.
