Pdf Summary
The Lung Cancer Policy Network, a global initiative of experts, has developed a comprehensive framework and toolkit to promote the effective implementation of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening for lung cancer, with a special emphasis on including underserved communities. The framework, which spans six main domains, includes key questions and metrics to support global lung cancer screening efforts. It aims to mitigate structural health disparities and inequities, ensuring better participation from communities typically overlooked in public health initiatives.

The toolkit was initially informed by a combination of extensive literature reviews and expert interviews conducted across four continents. One of its focal areas, Domain 4, emphasizes Eligibility and Recruitment, highlighting approaches tailored to ensure those at high risk of lung cancer are encouraged to participate in screenings. This domain addresses how health inequities may both heighten the risk of lung cancer and impede screening access, urging culturally sensitive approaches.

Key resources have been developed to engage traditionally underserved communities, including a template for community identification and program design, and case studies from England and Aotearoa New Zealand that explore innovative strategies to boost screening participation. Released in March 2023, the framework and toolkit have already seen significant uptake, with plans to enhance them further by April 2024 to better serve these communities.

The initiative, supported by major health companies and informed by evidence-based research, is believed to be the first of its kind globally. It promises to inform policy-making by providing practical evidence for implementing high-quality, inclusive, and cost-effective LDCT screening programs. The toolkit's development is strategically aimed at ensuring these screening programs not only address lung cancer effectively but also promote equitable healthcare access.
