Pdf Summary
The University of California Lung Cancer Consortium (UCLCC), formed by clinical leaders from five NCI-designated UC comprehensive cancer centers, has established the Lung Cancer Screening and Prevention Task Force (LSPTF), aiming to improve lung cancer screening rates in California. Despite California having a lower-than-average national lung cancer rate, it falls in the lowest tier for screening utilization, with only 0.7% of high-risk individuals screened.

The LSPTF identified three strategic priorities: enhancing participant identification for screening, developing a digital resource to engage eligible participants, and improving access for underserved communities. Screening champions, identified at each UC campus, helped align best practices, including tobacco cessation strategies across the five sites.

Initial results include the creation of professional collaboration among 30 members and the launch of a digital dashboard to monitor lung cancer screening metrics across the UC health systems. A shared decision-making platform, ucscreenca.org, was developed and promoted during Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November 2023. Community and stakeholder engagement events were also organized to increase awareness and promote lung cancer screening.

Furthermore, policy and technical improvements are being pursued to accurately capture tobacco use data within the electronic health record system. The UCLCC continues to encourage collaboration with regional partners to enhance lung screening efforts, demonstrating an integrated approach involving expertise from radiology, pulmonology, tumor biology, and public health, among others. The task force aims to utilize these collective efforts to foster lung cancer screening improvements across the state.
