Pdf Summary
The study "Creating Safe Connections" focuses on improving equitable access to lung cancer screening for marginalized patients, who often encounter discrimination as a barrier. The project aims to train healthcare providers to deliver patient-centered and equity-promoting care through an e-learning module co-designed by various stakeholders, including policymakers, healthcare providers, researchers, and patient partners with lived experiences. This module, available online and accredited for Continuing Medical Education (CME) by the University of British Columbia, seeks to enhance healthcare providers' understanding of lung cancer risks.

The usability of this e-learning module was tested using a pragmatic, interdisciplinary approach, involving primary care providers, cancer strategic leads, educators, and patients. Testing involved using a 5-point Likert scale survey and open-ended questions. Results showed that all participants completed the module, with most accessing it via smartphones and laptops/desktops. While some navigational challenges were reported, 100% of users found the module useful for practice, recommending it to colleagues and appreciating the mix of interactivity it offered.

Overall, the study found that correcting navigational issues, integrating jurisdictionally relevant resources, and incorporating more specific examples could further enhance learning effectiveness. The authors suggest that a patient-centric usability testing approach significantly improves the module's educational impact. Future steps include the Canada-wide implementation and evaluation of the module and adapting it into French for broader applicability. The study was conducted with the support of Improving Cancer Care Equity Lab and funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research.
