Pdf Summary
The "Female Asian Nonsmoker Screening Study" (FANSS) is a pilot initiative aimed at screening Asian women with no smoking history for lung cancer using low-dose CT (LDCT) chest scans over three years. Recognizing the recruitment challenges typically faced by minority populations in clinical trials, such as language barriers and lack of awareness, the program implemented a variety of strategies to boost participant enrollment.

Key recruitment strategies included establishing a multilingual dedicated phone line and employing bilingual research staff with access to phone interpretation services to streamline participant communication. Community outreach was conducted via informational flyers in English and Chinese distributed in venues serving the Asian community, including pharmacies and storefronts in NYC Chinatown. Additionally, a dedicated website was created to facilitate participant registration.

On the technological front, the campaign leveraged Epic EMR's DataCore feature to identify potential participants who matched specific criteria (e.g., Asian female ages 40-74, no smoking history) and had an active MyChart account. Eligible participants were contacted through MyChart with an IRB-approved message, and follow-ups were conducted to confirm eligibility.

Results from the study period (March 5, 2021, to January 27, 2024) showed that 1,518 women expressed interest, with 760 completing the informed consent process. The integration of MyChart messaging significantly boosted recruitment, accounting for a 21% increase in enrollment.

Conclusively, the study demonstrated that culturally tailored outreach and the adoption of technological tools like MyChart can effectively increase participation levels in non-smoking history lung cancer screening programs. These recruitment strategies could also benefit lung cancer screenings for smokers and other clinical trials.
