Pdf Summary
The study explores the characteristics and experiences of patients with primary lung cancer who attended a pulmonology clinic in Bogotá, Colombia. This retrospective cross-sectional analysis covers patient appointments from January 2019 to August 2023.

The study involved 165 patients, with data highlighting some unique demographics and clinical findings. Notably, 59% of the patients were female, and 50% had never smoked. Furthermore, 37.5% of the patients were not exposed to any tobacco, woodsmoke, asbestos, or silica, indicating other possible risk factors or causes in these cases.

Regarding the staging of lung cancer, 31% of patients were diagnosed at stages 0 to II. The most common type of lung cancer observed was adenocarcinoma (68%), followed by squamous cell carcinoma (18%), carcinoids (7%), high-grade neuroendocrine tumors (4%), and other epithelial types (3%).

Genetic testing was performed on 81 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, revealing that 52% had at least one driver gene mutation, which includes genes like EGFR, ALK, RET, MET, ROS1, or BRAF V600.

The study also highlights significant delays in diagnosis and treatment. The median delay for diagnostics was 46 days with an interquartile range of 0 to 80 days, while the treatment delay had a median of 54 days with an interquartile range of 28 to 130 days. These delays exceed recommended times, suggesting a need for improved strategies to expedite patient care.

Overall, the findings underscore the importance of developing strategies for early lung cancer detection, especially among women and non-smokers, and highlight the critical need to address prolonged diagnosis and treatment times to improve patient outcomes in Colombia.
