Pdf Summary
This study focuses on mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung, a rare subtype of adenocarcinoma, within a Brazilian population, highlighting its clinical, pathological, and molecular features, alongside patient outcomes. The research is retrospective, covering 2,506 lung cancer cases from 2011 to 2023, finding 106 cases of mucinous adenocarcinoma.

The study utilizes various statistical tools, including a Cox survival analysis to evaluate potential prognostic factors on disease-free and overall survival rates. Factors examined include age, smoking status, ECOG performance status, comorbidities, clinical presentation, histological risk, genetic alterations, and first-line treatment strategies.

Key findings from the study show a significant difference in overall survival based on smoking status, with never smokers demonstrating a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.28 (p=0.012) compared to current/former smokers, indicating better survival outcomes for never smokers. Likewise, better ECOG performance status (0-1) is linked to improved survival outcomes with an HR of 0.32 (p=0.028). Genetic alterations were analyzed, with no significant differences in outcomes between those with actionable driver gene alterations and KRAS mutations versus other mutations. Similarly, no substantial survival difference was noted between patients who received chemoimmunotherapy versus chemotherapy alone.

The study concludes that while smoking status and performance status have a notable impact on survival, other factors like histological risk and genetic alterations do not have a statistically significant effect. This research contributes valuable insights into the unique characteristics and survival predictors of mucinous adenocarcinoma in a Brazilian context, addressing a gap in existing literature and providing a foundation for future studies.
