Pdf Summary
The study titled "WNT/β-Catenin Signalling Pathway in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Study of Immuno-expression GSK-3β, β-catenin, and CD44" investigates the role of specific proteins associated with the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway in advanced-stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). Researchers, including Erna Kristiani and colleagues, aimed to uncover how these proteins influence clinicopathological features and the efficacy of platinum-based chemotherapy.

Data for this case-control study were retrospectively collected from NSCLC patients at stages III-IV. The study included patients with adenocarcinoma EGFR-wild type and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) undergoing three cycles of platinum-based chemotherapy. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was used to assess GSK-3β, β-catenin, and CD44 expressions in tumor samples, with treatment outcomes evaluated using RECIST criteria. The outcomes were classified into favorable (complete response, partial response, and stable disease) and unfavorable (progressive disease).

A total of 62 samples were analyzed, revealing that GSK-3β expression was notably higher in males, patients with stage III cancer, and those with the SCC subtype. Although GSK-3β expression tended to be higher in those with unfavorable responses, and β-catenin and CD44 were higher in favorable responders, these trends were not statistically significant. No significant linear correlations were found among the expression levels of GSK-3β, β-catenin, and CD44.

The study underscores the complex relationship between biological markers and clinicopathological traits in NSCLC, suggesting that further research is needed to explore potential therapeutic targets within the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway.
