Pdf Summary
The study compares the prognosis of patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) undergoing post-operative adjuvant chemotherapy, distinguishing between pure SCLC and combined SCLC, which includes components of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Conducted at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, the retrospective review involved 65 patients who received treatment following surgical resection from January 2008 to August 2023. These were categorized into 43 patients with pure SCLC and 22 with combined SCLC.

Outcomes measured included disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). The median DFS was 109.6 months for pure SCLC and 54.2 months for combined SCLC, although this difference was not statistically significant (p=0.28). Similarly, the median OS was 115.4 months for pure SCLC, while data for combined SCLC was not reached, showing no significant difference (p=0.37). Despite the lack of statistical significance, the study observed a trend where combined SCLC showed potential poorer prognosis compared to pure SCLC.

LCNEC (large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma) was the most frequent component within the combined SCLC group. Post-therapy recurrence was observed in 20 patients, with the thorax having fewer recurrences compared to lymph nodes, which were more common.

The study highlights the need for further exploration into the clinical implications of combined SCLC, especially regarding tailored treatment strategies and patient management. The findings suggest that despite the small sample size, combined SCLC may pose a poorer prognosis, underlining the importance of recognizing different SCLC subtypes in clinical practice.
