Pdf Summary
This study, conducted by a team at the Pavilhão Pereira Filho Thoracic Surgery department in Porto Alegre, Brazil, analyzed long-term oncological outcomes for patients who underwent surgical resection of bronchopulmonary neuroendocrine tumors (bpNET). These tumors, characterized by a well-differentiated malignancy, are primarily treated through surgical resection, the gold standard for bpNET management.

The research was a retrospective review of a prospectively collected database, evaluating patients between January 2013 and December 2023. The study included 142 patients, divided into two histological subtypes: typical carcinoid (TC, n=124) and atypical carcinoid (AC, n=18).

The primary focus was on overall survival, with secondary endpoints examining event-free survival, perioperative morbidity, mortality, and patterns of recurrence. Results indicated a median follow-up period of 29 months. The overall 10-year survival rate was favorable at 71.6%. Typical carcinoid patients demonstrated a longer mean survival of 116 months compared to 89.6 months for atypical carcinoids, although this difference was not statistically significant (p0.209). However, event-free survival showed significant differences between groups, with better outcomes for typical carcinoid (p0.005) and patients without lymph node involvement (p0.001).

The study underscores the favorable long-term prognosis post-surgical resection for bpNET patients and highlights the importance of surgery as a key treatment. Additionally, it suggests the need for further research to better understand the long-term outcomes and management strategies for these diverse tumor types. The actionable takeaway is the continued emphasis on surgical resection for managing these tumors and assessing factors such as histological subtype and lymph node involvement for prognostic implications.
