Pdf Summary
The presentation titled "Impact of a Multidisciplinary Team on Overall Survival in Patients with Pleural Mesothelioma: Experience from a Single Institution in Mexico" by Dr. Saul Campos-Gomez examines how the formation of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) affected patient survival rates at Centro Oncológico Estatal ISSEMyM in Mexico.

Pleural mesothelioma, a complex disease, often necessitates intricate treatment strategies. A multidisciplinary approach allows patients access to various expertise levels and resources not typically available in a singular medical specialty. The MDT for thoracic malignancies was established at the center in 2014 to enhance patient care.

The study aimed to evaluate the effect of MDT establishment on overall survival in patients with pleural mesothelioma diagnosed between January 2011 and January 2023. Patients were categorized into cohorts before and after MDT intervention, with data gathered through local databases. The study undertook a 12-month follow-up for all cases. Survival statistics were determined using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and other statistical methods through SPSS software.

The study included 49 patients, primarily male (83.8%), with an average age of 53.1 years. According to WHO criteria, 80.6% had epithelioid cell-type tumors. Most patients were in advanced stages, with 29% classified as Stage III and 71% as Stage IV. Of these, 15 patients were treated before the MDT establishment, and 34 after. The median overall survival increased from 9.9 months pre-MDT to 22 months post-MDT, with MDT intervention linked to improved survival rates.

In conclusion, the establishment of MDT significantly improved overall survival, suggesting enhanced access to specialized care and novel treatments. The findings support the broader adoption of MDTs for better patient outcomes in pleural mesothelioma treatment.
