Pdf Summary
This study investigates sex and racial disparities in hospitalizations and outcomes for malignant mesothelioma (MM) across the United States, utilizing data from 35,230 hospitalizations between 2017 and 2020. Significant differences were noted in the distribution of MM hospitalizations, with 69.8% of the cases involving males and 73.5% white individuals. The study finds that males, who were generally older and exhibited more comorbid conditions, faced a greater risk of mortality compared to females, with an adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of 1.23. Despite this mortality risk, females incurred higher hospital costs averaging $135,864 compared to $107,520 for males, and experienced longer hospital stays, averaging 9.3 days versus 7.7 days for males.

Racial disparities were evident in the economic and duration aspects of care, where white patients incurred lower hospital costs ($97,464) compared to nonwhite patients ($167,715), and had shorter hospital stays (7.3 days vs. 10.7 days for nonwhites). While race did not significantly influence mortality odds, it had substantial bearings on hospital costs and length of stay.

The study also highlights that females exhibited a greater likelihood of depression, generalized anxiety, and atelectasis but lower odds of arrhythmias when compared to males. The findings underscore existing disparities in MM treatment and outcomes, emphasizing the need for further research to understand the underlying causes and to formulate policies aimed at reducing these disparities in healthcare. Overall, while males face higher mortality rates, females and nonwhite individuals encounter greater hospital costs and longer stays, suggesting significant inequities linked to sex and race in MM healthcare outcomes.
