Pdf Summary
A retrospective study conducted by Riyaz Shah from the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust explored the demographics and occupational backgrounds of patients with mesothelioma in Kent, Southeast England. Mesothelioma is commonly linked to prior asbestos exposure, with a latency period before symptom onset. As asbestos usage declined near the end of the 20th century, the peak of mesothelioma cases is anticipated before 2030. This study examined cases diagnosed between April 2019 and January 2024 to understand current risk factors better.

The research obtained ethics approval from the KMMS Research Ethics Advisory Group and was registered as a service evaluation at the MTW NHS trust. The data involved patient demographics, including age, gender, histological subtype, and location within Kent, alongside their occupational or asbestos exposure history where available. The study categorized these occupational histories to identify predominant exposure routes.

Findings revealed 337 male cases (82.4%) and 72 female cases (17.6%), with the average diagnosis age being 75.7 years. The most common histological subtype was epithelioid (72.5%), followed by sarcomatoid (16%) and biphasic (11.2%). No significant age differences were noted between subtypes, genders, or NHS Trust affiliation. Yet, patients diagnosed radiologically without a histological diagnosis were statistically older.

Regarding occupations, construction was the leading exposure route (37.3%), followed by other jobs, shipbuilding, and the armed forces. Builders, carpenters, and plumbers were the most affected trades within the construction sector. The study concluded that the demographics align with existing UK trends, maintaining consistency with past data on occupational exposure. Future assessments are planned to monitor potential shifts in incidence and trends over the next decade.
