Pdf Summary
This case report, presented by F. Gradica et al. from University Hospital “Sh. Ndroqi” in Tirana, Albania, describes a rare instance of rib hyperostosis in a 37-year-old female patient. Hyperostosis is a condition involving abnormal bone growth often linked to altered forces across affected ribs, typically occurring as benign tumors called osteochondromas. These growths are considered developmental anomalies rather than true neoplasms, frequently appearing around long bone growth plates.

The patient reported severe pain in the upper right abdominal quadrant, experiencing symptoms for several months with recent exacerbation linked to trunk movements. Despite treatment with tranquilizers, her condition persisted. A thoracic CT scan revealed significant ossification and elongation of the anterior part of her 10th rib, extending toward the liver.

Rib hyperostosis often raises suspicions of malignancy and can cause severe pain when impacting nearby organs. In this case, surgical resection was deemed necessary due to the rib's compression of the liver, which was visualized during surgery. The rib left a 7-8 cm furrow on the liver's surface without inflicting damage.

Biopsy confirmed hyperostosis of the anterior costochondral part of the 10th right rib. Post-surgery, the patient experienced relief with no further concerns. The case emphasizes the importance of surgical intervention in symptomatic rib hyperostosis, especially where organ compression is involved. The findings were presented at the 2024 World Conference on Lung Cancer in San Diego, USA.

This contributes to existing medical knowledge by detailing the presentation, diagnosis, and successful management of rib hyperostosis with significant pain and organ compression, demonstrating the potential need for surgical solutions in similar cases.
