Pdf Summary
The document presents a study on a nationwide oncology navigation program in Brazil, focusing on lung cancer patients from 2020 to 2023. The program, part of the Rede D’Or healthcare network, aims to improve cancer care by coordinating more timely access to diagnosis and treatment. Started in 46 facilities in 2018 and expanded with a web-based system in 2020, the program allocated nurse navigators to enhance care coordination. Regular virtual meetings are organized to review data and address barriers to care.

Between 2020 and 2023, the program identified 28,977 cancer patients, of which 1,897 (6.5%) were diagnosed with lung cancer. The majority of these patients were newly diagnosed, and most were identified in inpatient clinical units (33.9%) and emergency rooms (22.6%). The program found that 55.9% of lung cancer patients were female. Among these patients, 28.0% underwent surgery, and only 54 patients died during hospitalization, while 78 were readmitted before outpatient consultation.

The program aims to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality by eliminating barriers to timely cancer care, such as financial, social, and logistical challenges. The success of the program in coordinating nationwide data suggests its feasibility. It is currently evaluating outcomes like the time taken for pathology reports, staging, and treatment initiation. In the future, the program hopes to use this data to address cancer care disparities across Brazil, aiding individual patients and improving care equity.
