Pdf Summary
The single-day multidisciplinary clinic for patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center aimed to enhance patient care and clinical trial enrollment by providing coordinated appointments with thoracic surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. Between April 2023 and March 2024, 67 patients were evaluated, with a median age of 67. The majority of patients were men, and 92% chose to continue their treatment within the institution.

The study aimed to assess whether earlier multidisciplinary intervention could effectively aid in patient care, even for those lacking a full diagnosis or staging at the initial consultation. It showed that 70% of patients received chemotherapy, 44% underwent radiation, and 26% had surgery, while 87% enrolled in a clinical protocol. Most patients presented with Stage II or III NSCLC, and from diagnosis to treatment initiation, the median time was 21 days. Regarding patient experience, a vast majority found the clinic helpful in decision-making and were highly likely to recommend it to others.

The results indicate that the multidisciplinary approach improved patient retention and treatment efficiency in a complex patient cohort, leading to high satisfaction and significant protocol participation. Despite incomplete initial diagnoses or staging, patients benefitted considerably from the multidisciplinary care model. The team plans to expand the clinic to additional facilities and explore its applicability to other thoracic disease scenarios such as limited metastatic disease and oligoprogression. The findings suggest that multidisciplinary clinic visits could be a valuable strategy for managing complex cancer cases, even when initial assessments are incomplete.
