EP.16F.02 Availability of Supportive Care in Lung Cancer: A Global Perspective
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The document highlights the global disparities in supportive care available for individuals affected by lung cancer, addressing the psychological and physical stressors they face. Even in resource-rich regions, barriers exist in accessing comprehensive and culturally appropriate care, which includes psychosocial oncology services and palliative care.

The Global Lung Cancer Coalition (GLCC), founded in 2001, is a network comprised of 41 organizations from 29 countries working towards improving early detection, care quality, and access to lung cancer supportive services. Significant initiatives by GLCC include the Global Lung Cancer e-Atlas, journalism awards, and research surveys.

To address supportive care gaps, a survey was conducted among 33 GLCC member organizations, with a high response rate of 85% obtained from 24 participating organizations. The survey sought to better understand the availability of supportive services globally, including psychoeducational and psychosocial support, and the changes these organizations experienced due to the pandemic.

The findings revealed that many organizations expanded their services after 2020, adapting to new needs, while a few scaled back. Emotional support offerings include professional counseling, various support groups, and peer support, both in-person and online. Physical support services provided involve movement classes, besides rehabilitation and palliative assistance.

Going forward, the study's outcomes will shape future GLCC meetings to promote the development of a global repository for psychosocial oncology care, encouraging mentorship and data-sharing. The Coalition aims to lead efforts in expanding these services worldwide.

The report concludes by encouraging thoracic oncology professionals to refer patients to advocacy organizations for psychosocial support and to promote the expansion of necessary services. The overarching aim is to ensure that lung cancer patients and their caregivers receive adequate and tailored support, irrespective of geographical boundaries.
