Pdf Summary
The Global Lung Cancer Coalition (GLCC) upholds lung cancer patients' rights to dignity, respect, and active participation in treatment decisions. A survey commissioned by the GLCC aimed to explore lung cancer patients' preferences for engaging with their treatment teams. Conducted from March 28 to April 18, 2024, the survey collected responses from 905 participants across 18 countries, with data indicating that 78% of the respondents were male, and 49% were 55 years or older.

Results showed that 98% of participants felt involved in decisions regarding their treatment, with 48% feeling fully involved, a notable increase from the previous year’s figures. The survey highlighted a strong preference for face-to-face communication with healthcare providers, particularly in critical situations such as receiving a diagnosis, attending the first consultation, regular check-ups, and when there were changes in treatment or disease status. In-person interactions were preferred across all patient pathway stages, while telephone communications were commonly the secondary choice, except for diagnosis disclosure.

The survey concluded that treatment teams should consider individual preferences for communication methods, emphasizing the importance of accommodating face-to-face meetings when possible. The findings suggest potential research opportunities to explore factors influencing the preference for in-person consultations and to investigate how telehealth solutions might be refined to better accommodate patient needs.

Overall, the study underscores the necessity of ensuring lung cancer patients feel involved and respected in their treatment journeys, with providers tailoring their approaches to align with patient preferences. Comprehensive country-level findings of this survey are set to be published on the GLCC website.
