Pdf Summary
The study "Ready, Set, Screen: Evaluating Community Readiness for Lung Cancer Screening Among Non-Hispanic Black Populations in Florida," led by Shanada Monestime, highlights critical insights into lung cancer screening (LCS) among high-risk non-Hispanic Black (NHB) communities. Despite having the highest incidence rates of lung cancer among minority groups, only 2.4% of high-risk individuals in Florida participate in screenings.

The research employed qualitative semi-structured interviews with NHB community leaders, high-risk smokers, and individuals with lung cancer. Interview data were scored using a community readiness model, ranging from 1 (no awareness) to 9 (high community ownership). The dimensions assessed included community programs, awareness level, leadership support, community attitudes, understanding of lung cancer causes and impacts, and resource availability.

The study's results indicated an overall low readiness score of 1.92, signifying minimal awareness about the importance of lung cancer screening. Although lung cancer awareness is low in the community, the study found interest in supporting screening initiatives. While few community members are expected to actively engage in such efforts, a significant number are likely to provide passive support, particularly community leaders.

This research is groundbreaking as it uniquely applies a community readiness model to explore the challenges facing early lung cancer detection within NHB populations. Findings indicate that social determinants of health and insufficient leadership engagement substantially impact awareness levels. The data will help GO2 for Lung Cancer and affiliated organizations to develop targeted strategies and interventions, in collaboration with community and faith-based leaders, to enhance lung cancer screening initiatives in NHB communities, addressing the distinct needs and challenges faced by these groups.
