Pdf Summary
The study, conducted at Henry Ford Health, explores how socioeconomic status (SES) impacts patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in individuals diagnosed with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). Using data from 491 patients between 2020 and 2023, four domains were analyzed: depression, fatigue, pain interference, and physical function. Univariate analysis revealed that patients from neighborhoods with higher deprivation indexes, indicating lower SES, reported higher depression and pain scores. White patients and those from these areas also reported more significant fatigue.

The multivariable linear regression models assessed various factors including age, sex, race, marital status, stage of cancer, comorbidities, and area deprivation index. Notable findings included lower depression scores among males, while White patients experienced higher depression and fatigue scores. The area deprivation index was a significant factor, with those from higher deprivation areas reporting worse results across several domains of PROs.

The results underscore the importance of considering SES in cancer care, highlighting its potential influence on patients' experiences and outcomes. The study also noted that PROs could help identify specific patient groups likely to experience more distress, thereby allowing for targeted interventions.

Despite its insights, the study's limitations include its small sample size, being single-centered, and lacking longitudinal follow-up, suggesting a need for further research with larger, more diverse populations over extended periods. These findings highlight the critical role of socioeconomic factors in healthcare access and outcomes, and the need for tailored healthcare interventions for lung cancer patients from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
