Pdf Summary
The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) has released a statement on tobacco control and smoking cessation. Cigarette smoking is responsible for over 80% of all lung cancer cases, making it the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. While smoking rates have decreased in high-income countries, the number of lung cancer deaths is projected to increase in low and middle-income countries where smoking rates are rising. The IASLC recognizes the need for primary prevention and cessation efforts to combat the tobacco epidemic. Effective interventions include higher taxes on tobacco products, comprehensive advertising and promotion bans, product regulation, mass media campaigns, and tobacco-free policies. Tax policies that increase cigarette prices have been successful in reducing smoking prevalence. However, there is also a need for new breakthrough interventions that provide viable options for nicotine addiction without the harmful effects of smoking cigarettes. The IASLC supports public health measures that limit tobacco sales and usage, as well as legal reforms that hold tobacco manufacturers accountable for selling deadly products. They also encourage the adoption of smoke-free policies, higher tobacco taxes, and the support of tobacco cessation programs. Additionally, the IASLC urges its members to implement tobacco cessation programs in their clinical settings and advocate for lung cancer prevention and research initiatives. The organization will continue to develop tools and disseminate information to support evidence-based tobacco cessation practices. It is essential to address the tobacco problem globally in order to prevent lung cancer and decrease the burden of the disease.
