EP.01.22 The Effectiveness of Offering Repeated Co-Located, Opt-Out Smoking Cessation Support Within Lung Cancer Screening

Pdf Summary
This study evaluates the effectiveness of providing repeated, co-located, opt-out smoking cessation support during lung cancer screening, focusing on the second screening round of the Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial (YLST). The UK National Screening Committee recommends combining lung cancer screening with smoking cessation services to maximize health benefits. Previous research, including the YESS study, demonstrated that offering on-site smoking cessation assistance—comprising behavioural support, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), e-cigarettes, and pharmacotherapies—is effective and well-received during initial screening.

In March 2021, YLST initiated its second screening round, inviting both returning participants and those who had not responded to earlier invitations. The smoking cessation support offered mirrored that of the YESS study, providing up to 12 weeks of behavioural support and cessation aids alongside lung scan information. Preliminary analyses assessed uptake of the cessation offer and self-reported quit rates at 4 and 12 weeks post-screening.

Results indicate that co-located, opt-out specialist stop smoking support remains effective during the second lung screening round, showing strong participant engagement and promising short-term quit rates. These findings suggest that repeated, integrated cessation interventions at lung cancer screening appointments can capitalize on varying motivations for quitting smoking.

The study concludes that policymakers and health service commissioners should prioritize making evidence-based smoking cessation support routinely available at all lung cancer screening visits. This integrated approach can enhance smoking cessation outcomes and potentially improve the overall impact of lung cancer screening programs on public health. Further research is needed to explore long-term cessation outcomes and optimize support strategies across multiple screening rounds.
