EP.04.03 Uptake and Impact of a Framework to Support Implementation of Low-Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) Screening for Lung Cancer
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The Lung Cancer Policy Network developed a globally applicable framework in 2023 to support the implementation of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening programs. This framework aims to facilitate earlier lung cancer detection, improving treatment effectiveness and survival rates. It was informed by extensive literature reviews, expert interviews, and practical application in countries with active screening efforts, including Canada, Poland, South Korea, the UK, and the US. An online toolkit with adaptable resources—policy briefs, videos, and planning tools—is available to assist diverse health systems, encouraging readiness even where system capacity is still developing.

Case studies highlight the framework’s impact: in Kazakhstan, it accelerated the creation of a national screening program by revising screening guidelines and enabling systematic evaluation of 19 regional oncology centers. Similarly, the Lung Ambition Alliance Middle East & Africa Chapter used the framework to develop policy recommendations tailored to regional healthcare needs while aligning with global best practices. Furthermore, collaborations with groups like the Asia Pacific Coalition Against Lung Cancer have fostered knowledge-sharing and tailored policy shaping through webinars and workshops.

The framework is divided into six domains with associated metrics that identify screening gaps and direct targeted improvements. Since launch, it has been downloaded nearly 3,000 times and its toolkit used by almost 9,000 practitioners globally. Expanded in 2024–2025 to focus on underserved communities and financial planning, the framework continues to inform lung cancer policy and practice worldwide.

Next steps include broadening application across varied health systems to enhance evidence supporting equitable, cost-effective lung cancer screening. Upcoming workshops at the 2025 Asia Conference on Lung Cancer and in Africa aim to further guide implementation efforts. Overall, the framework promises to accelerate implementation, expand access to high-quality screening, and guide future lung cancer care policy improvements globally.
