Pdf Summary
This study aimed to explore awareness and intention regarding lung cancer screening (LCS) among adults eligible for screening who have never undergone LCS, and to identify individual-level factors influencing their intention to be screened. Conducted via an online cross-sectional survey from December 2023 to February 2024, the research involved 521 U.S. adults aged 50-80 who met the US Preventive Services Task Force criteria for LCS eligibility (current smokers or quit within 15 years with a 20 pack-year history). The main outcome measured was self-reported intention to undergo LCS within the next three months if advised by healthcare providers.

Key findings revealed that only 43.7% of participants had heard about LCS, and a striking 93.5% had not discussed screening with their providers in the past year, indicating substantial communication gaps. Despite this, a majority showed willingness to undergo screening if recommended: approximately 33% responded "definitely yes" and 53% “maybe/probably yes” to pursuing LCS soon. Demographically, the sample was predominantly female (63.3%) and white (83.7%), with an average age of 60.5 years, and 9% uninsured. Most were active smokers (83.4%), averaging 38.2 pack-years.

Multivariable analyses identified that being Black, having some college education, being retired, and holding the belief that there are too many confusing cancer prevention recommendations correlated with higher likelihood of intending to get screened.

In conclusion, despite low awareness and infrequent provider discussions, many screening-eligible adults are inclined to undergo LCS if encouraged by healthcare professionals. This underlines the critical need for improved patient-provider communication to increase screening uptake and early lung cancer detection.
