EP.04.24 Initial Experience With Cancer Screening Center: Model to Improve Lung Cancer Screening Uptake
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study reports on the initial experience of a comprehensive cancer screening center opened in 2022 at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, aiming to improve lung cancer screening uptake. Lung cancer screening rates in the U.S. were low, at 16.4% in 2022 nationally. Comprehensive centers that screen for multiple cancers during one visit have been linked to earlier cancer detection and could increase screening uptake.

The center reviewed records of all patients visiting between January 1 and December 31, 2022, assessing eligibility for cancer screenings based on United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines. Patient demographics and risk factors were collected. Lung cancer screening eligibility was identified in 76 out of 1,084 patients (7%). Among these eligible patients, the mean age was 62.5 years, 61.8% were male, 57.9% had a family history of cancer, and 100% were either current or former smokers. Many eligible patients were also due for other cancer screenings such as colorectal, breast, and cervical.

The lung cancer screening uptake rate among eligible patients at the center was remarkably high at 88.2%, far exceeding national averages. Most eligible patients completed their recommended lung cancer screening, often in combination with other cancer screenings.

The authors conclude that this multifaceted comprehensive cancer screening center model substantially increased lung cancer screening uptake. This approach may represent an effective new strategy to improve screening participation for multiple cancer types simultaneously, facilitating earlier detection and potentially improved outcomes.

In summary, the comprehensive screening center model implemented at Inova demonstrates promise in addressing low lung cancer screening rates through integrated, patient-centered services.
