This qualitative study explores the psychosocial impact of lung cancer on patients in India, where lung cancer is the leading cancer among men and a major cause of cancer-related deaths. Beyond physical symptoms, patients experience significant psychological, social, and emotional stress that adversely affects their quality of life. Conducted at a tertiary care hospital, the research involved in-depth interviews with eight lung cancer patients, using a semi-structured questionnaire focused on demographic details and the mental, social, and emotional dimensions of living with the disease.<br /><br />Thematic analysis revealed four main themes with ten subthemes, highlighting the multidimensional psychosocial burden faced by these patients. Key challenges identified include psychological distress, emotional turmoil, social isolation, and financial burdens. The study emphasizes that understanding these psychosocial factors is crucial for developing comprehensive, holistic care strategies.<br /><br />The authors propose several interventions to address these challenges: enhancing patient education and self-empowerment, fostering a positive outlook, strengthening healthcare provider support, and implementing community and policy-level measures. Additionally, peer and group therapies alongside targeted psychological support are recommended to improve mental health outcomes and overall wellbeing.<br /><br />Ultimately, the study underscores the need for compassionate healthcare interactions and mental health care integration into lung cancer management to improve patients’ quality of life. This research advocates for a holistic approach, combining medical treatment with psychosocial support to better meet the complex needs of lung cancer patients in India.
