EP.15.20 Measurable Role Transformation Following Disease-Specific Training for Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Navigators
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study evaluates the impact of a disease-specific training workshop designed for multidisciplinary lung cancer navigators, led by GO2 for Lung Cancer. The Lung Cancer Navigator Program, initiated in 2022, aims to enhance care quality and screening for at-risk populations by addressing existing gaps in specialized professional education. The inaugural Navigator Workshop delivered comprehensive lung cancer-focused training through ten didactic presentations by subject matter experts, targeting systemic and patient-level care barriers.

A longitudinal pilot survey was conducted from June to August 2024, nine months after the 2023 Workshop, to assess its lasting effects. Among 69 attendees, 15 (22%) completed the impact survey. All respondents reported improved knowledge of evidence-based guidelines and best practices, with 87% rating this improvement as high or very high. Similarly, 100% indicated their professional navigator roles were expanded or enhanced, with 74% rating this enhancement as high or exceptional. Job satisfaction increased for all surveyed, with 87% reporting significant improvement.

The Workshop notably improved attendees' competence, confidence, and ability to contribute effectively to multidisciplinary lung cancer teams, suggesting that focused disease-specific training strengthens professional roles and clinical outcomes. Increased job satisfaction also highlights the role such training plays in workforce engagement and retention.

Limitations include the small sample size and reliance on self-reported data; however, improvements were consistent across participants. Plans for repeat longitudinal surveys following the 2024 Workshop aim to validate and extend these findings.

Overall, the Navigator Workshop provides a scalable model to advance lung cancer care by equipping navigators with targeted education, fostering professional development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and improved patient outcomes in lung cancer management.
