EP.16.08 Preliminary Study of Culturally Adapted Approaches to Enhance Lung Cancer Education for Hispanic/Latino Populations
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This preliminary study addresses lung cancer education disparities among Hispanic/Latino (HL) populations in the U.S., where over 12,000 HL individuals are diagnosed annually. Many in this community primarily speak Spanish and have limited access to high-quality, culturally relevant, and linguistically appropriate lung cancer information. This often forces them to rely on less accurate sources like social media, complicating understanding due to limited medical literacy and preferences for audiovisual formats.

To bridge this gap, GO2 for Lung Cancer developed the Nuestra Gente initiative, a Spanish-language audiovisual campaign providing approachable, up-to-date educational videos on lung cancer topics such as screening, treatment options, biomarker testing, and self-advocacy. These materials, created in collaboration with trusted HL community members, are freely available on GO2’s YouTube channel.

Structured focus groups with Spanish-speaking HL adults were conducted to assess the videos’ effectiveness, accessibility, and cultural relevance. Preliminary findings showed that while participants found the content useful, challenges arose from the use of traditional medical terminology without adequate explanation, lack of visual reinforcements, and accessibility issues such as the need for Spanish subtitles. Elements like clear language, slower pacing, supportive tone, eye contact, and supplementary visuals (infographics, QR codes) were recommended to improve comprehension and retention.

Conclusions emphasize the importance of culturally adapted, clear, and accessible lung cancer education that leverages established media engagement practices and respects HL cultural communication preferences. Simplifying medical concepts and using motivational delivery styles can empower HL individuals to make informed health decisions. Ongoing focus groups aim to validate and build on these insights, improving educational impact for the growing HL population projected to reach nearly 30% of Americans by 2030.
