EP.17.15 Tackling the Lung Cancer Crisis in Canada: Co-Creating a National Strategy to Reduce Lung Cancer Mortality by 30% Action Plan?
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The Canadian Cancer Society has developed the Pan-Canadian Lung Cancer Action Plan (2025–2035) to address lung cancer, Canada’s leading cause of cancer death, and the persistent inequities in access, diagnosis, and outcomes. Their vision is to improve quality of life and health outcomes for all affected and reduce lung cancer mortality by 30% over the next decade.

The strategy was co-created through a community-driven, multi-phase process involving a diverse steering committee, people with lived experience (PWLE), surveys with 240 respondents, and a summit with 100 participants. Priority setting utilized evidence-informed approaches such as Modified Delphi and James Lind Alliance principles.

The Plan focuses on four strategic priorities:

1. Reduce exposure to carcinogenic inhalants by raising awareness and minimizing contact with tobacco smoke, industrial emissions, and environmental pollutants.
2. Detect lung cancer earlier by increasing understanding and availability of lung cancer screening programs and diagnostic technologies.
3. Improve access to timely, best-in-class care by accelerating access to advanced treatments and clinical trials to optimize patient outcomes.
4. Accelerate lung cancer research to support the development of innovative treatments and diagnostic tools.

A key cross-cutting enabler involves addressing stigma—a significant social barrier linked to the association between smoking and lung cancer—even as smoking rates decline.

Recognizing the complexity of lung cancer, the Action Plan emphasizes partnerships among organizations, patient groups, and individuals to achieve its vision collaboratively. The roadmap aims to significantly reduce lung cancer mortality by assembling broad-based partnerships and ensuring meaningful progress for all affected by lung cancer over the next decade.
